Kemia Bridgewater

is Changing College Retention Rates

Mentor & Co-founder, First Generation Gems
Detroit, MI

This Detroit native and Hampton University student knows first-hand that being a first gen college student is tough. Fueled by her own struggles, Kemia jumped at the chance to support others, co-founding the non-profit First Generation Gems (FGG). The org is designed to support college students of color with mentorships as well as material aid, so they can stay on the yard and on track.

  • “It takes a lot of money to get to college...and there are a lot of resources that people don’t know about because there was no one to tell them. We just want to be able to help bridge the gap.”
